Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleyev - just one of the examples that pre-Soviet Russia was not a backward country the Communists would like us to believe. Pavlov's Nobel prize for medicine was awarded thirteen years before the Soviets took power. Before leaving for America, Sikorski built fourengine airplanes which flew regular service from Petrograd to Moscow.
